The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web
Teeming with Microbes, by Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis (Timber Press, 2010; $25) will introduce you to the fascinating subterranean world of your garden. You'll meet a multitude of microbes that are hard at work making your garden soil a fertile foundation for plants, and gain advice on steps to take to make the soil even better over time. Great reading for a winter day!

Clever Gardening Technique

Easy Leaf Gathering
If you've spent the better part of a Saturday at the end of a leaf rake, here's a tip to avoid the blisters and sore muscles while saving time too. Use a lawnmower with the chute open to "mow and blow" the leaves toward the middle of the yard to consolidate the leaves into a strip or mound. Then lay a tarp next to the strip and rake them onto the tarp for easy dragging to shrub beds, the vegetable garden or the compost pile.
