Greenville Master Gardener Symposium
The Greater Greenville Master Gardeners of South Carolina will host their tenth anniversary symposium, Celebrating the Southern Garden: Places That Feed the Soul & Satisfy the Appetite, on February 12, 2011. Featured speakers include Dr. Allan Armitage, famed horticulture professor and researcher at the University of Georgia and internationally acclaimed speaker and writer; Barbara Pleasant, contributing editor to Mother Earth News and The Herb Companion magazines and a prolific author; and Pam Beck, award-winning writer and photographer for Carolina Gardener magazine and other publications. The event will be held at the Carolina First Center from 8 am to 3:30 pm. Lunch and parking are included in the ticket price of $60 ($65 after December 31). Double Take Flowering Quince
Proven Winners is bringing an old-fashioned favorite back into fashion with its new Double Take series of flowering quince (Chaenomeles). This new and improved variety, which is thornless and features double blooms, offers early spring color, is hardy in zones 5 to 8, and is drought tolerant when established. The series includes 'Scarlet Storm' with dark red double flowers, 'Pink Storm' with extra large, two-inch, salmon or coral colored flowers, and 'Orange Storm' with bright orange, camellia-like blooms.
