Favorite or New Plant

Golden Raintree
If you're limited on space but want a relatively small ornamental tree, plant golden raintree (Koelreuteria paniculata). It grows from 18 to 20 feet with an equal spread. Once established, this tree tolerates drought periods quite well. Too much water tends to promote weak wood and more susceptibility to storm damage. It blooms with attractive bright yellow flower clusters in summer. Later, clusters of oriental lantern-like seed capsules appear for fall decoration.

Clever Gardening Technique

Homemade Plant Shield
Use a plant shield to protect plants from drift when you spot-spray weeds. An easy way to make a homemade version is to cut the bottom off an empty, plastic, gallon milk jug. Place the gallon jug over the offending weed. To prevent spray drift, spray the weed with weed control from the top opening. This will confine the spray to the weed and prevent weed killer from getting on desirable plants. Read and follow label directions on any weed control product.
