The Herb Society of America offers profiles of some of the most common herbs, including the 2010 herb of the year, dill, at Herb Society Herb Profiles. With each profile, they provide information about the history and origin of the herb, myths and folklore, how to use the herb, how to harvest, and storage tips.
It may seem a bit early to think about summer reading, but with the hot weather we've been having in our region, the idea of sitting on the screened-in porch with a glass of lemonade and a good book sounds quite appealing. There are any number of great garden "reads," but one of the best, for both beginning and experienced gardeners, is The Essential Earthman by Henry Mitchell (Indiana University Press, 2003, $16.95). This reprint of Mitchell's 1981 book is the first collection of his garden columns for the Washington Post. A reviewer has written of Mitchell, "Not only does he instruct readers with his expert advice, but in his own rather cantankerous way, he consistently provides a gentle, philosophical assist; a balm for the bumps and blows of daily life."
