Clever Gardening Technique

Leave Pruning Cuts Unsealed
Once upon a time, it was recommended to seal pruning cuts on trees with various paints and sealants, but that's now known to be a bad practice. Research shows that it interferes with the plant's own healing mechanisms. Trees have specialized tissue, called meristematic tissue, that seals over the pruning wounds. Be sure your tools are disinfected between cuts with a 10% bleach solution so you don't transfer disease from plant to plant or from branch to branch. Make a proper pruning cut, then leave the tree alone!
