Run by the U.S. Forest Service, Celebrating Wildflowers is dedicated to the enjoyment of the thousands of wildflowers growing in our national forests and grasslands, as well as to the education of the public about the many values of native plants. Included is information on pollinators, native gardening and native plant materials, wildflower ethics and invasive plants. There is a resource section for teachers and a section of activities just for kids. I especially enjoyed the "Pollinator of the Month" page, which featured gorgeous pictures of the fritillary butterfly, along with information about its life cycle and suggestions for plants to attract it to the garden. I learned that, while the adult butterflies sip nectar from a variety of native flowers such as butterfly weed and Joe Pye weed, its caterpillars feed only on violets. What a delightful reason to plant these sweetly-scented flowers!
