Spring Flower Shows
Spring is around the corner, and that means the flower shows are too! Plan to attend at least one show, for new ideas and information and to get a needed dose of warmth and color. The Rhode Island Show starts Feb. 18 (http://www.flowershow.com/). The Connecticut Flower Show also starts Feb. 18 (http://www.ctflowershow.com/). The Portland (Maine) Flower show starts March 11 (http://www.portlandcompany.com/flower/). The Boston Flower Show starts March 24 (http://www.masshort.org/BLOOMS-2010). Vermont's Gorgeous Gardens & Green Living Show starts on March 13 (http://www.greenworksvermont.org/). The Seacoast Home, Garden & Flower Show (New Hampshire) starts March 26. And if these aren't enough there are plenty more shows further afield!

Society of Municipal Arborists
Every year, the Society of Municipal Arborists chooses an Urban Tree of the Year. The winner for 2010 is Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis). The tree is rated hardy in zones 4 to 9 and grows to a height of about 30 feet. In spring, small, purple-pink flowers blanket the leafless twigs and branches, heralding spring with a riot of color.
