Master Gardener Symposium
On February 6, the Greater Greenville (SC) Master Gardeners Association will sponsor "Unearth Your Passion," a symposium with varied educational opportunities and an exciting array of market vendors. Featured speakers include Dr. Rick Schoellhorn, Director of New Products for Proven Winners, who will take attendees on plant-gathering trip around the world; Gordon Hayward, world-renowned garden designer, illustrating his method of foolproof design; and Carol Reese, Ornamental Horticulturist with the University of Tennessee, who will share her penchant for unusual plants. The event will be held at the Carolina First Center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The registration fee of $55 includes lunch and parking. Books

The Garden in Winter
One of my very favorite garden books, The Garden in Winter, by Rosemary Verey (Frances Lincoln, Ltd., 1988), is a great inspiration for anyone who wants enhance their cool-season landscape. Verey, who begins with the declaration, "A garden in winter is the absolute test of the true gardener," emphasizes that the beauty of the season is not restricted to flowers. As she suggests, look to trees, shrubs, and grasses to provide form, texture, and color, and to the underlying design of beds, structures, and ornaments to etch a beautiful pattern or shadow on the landscape. Other lessons are offered in the examination of bark, berries, pods, leaves, and the rare flower. Seasonal photos, beautifully realized, offer equal encouragement.
