Maymont Flower and Garden Show
Flower shows are an annual rite of winter and early spring for gardeners. One of the earliest is the Maymont Flower and Garden Show held at the Great Richmond Convention Center Exhibit Hall, 400 East Marshall Street in Richmond, Virginia, from February 18 through February 21, 2010. Virginia's long-standing harbinger of spring will offer you the latest in horticulture, gardens, seminars and a marketplace filled with goodies that will have you dreaming of spring. Books

The American Woodland Garden
Receiving awards from both the American Horticultural Society and the Garden Writers Association, The American Woodland Garden: Capturing the Spirit of the Deciduous Forest, by Rick Darke (Timber Press, 2002; $49.95) illustrates a garden aesthetic based on the strengths and opportunities of the woodland. Darke takes into account the play of light, sound, and scent as well as the seasonal drama and the architectural interest of woody plants. He combines ecological understanding and artistic sensitivity with a detailed guide to designing, planting, and maintaining a garden in the woods. If Darke's eloquent prose and useful advice does not inspire, then the over 700 photographs will.
