Homes and Gardens in Miniature
The NC Arboretum is hosting "Building Small: American Folk Art Houses and Structures," at the Baker Exhibit Center through January 3, 2010. The visually rich display shows the remarkable imagination with which Americans have rendered the places of their community, history, or personal vision. The Baker Exhibit Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm; Sundays from 12 noon to 5 pm. For more information, call (828) 665-2492, or for a full schedule of events, check the Web site at http://www.ncarboretum.org.

Plant Names
If you're intrigued by plant history, you'll enjoy 100 Flowers and How They Got Their Names, by Diana Wells (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 1997). Filled with fun facts, folklore, and endearing stories, the book supplies little-known information about many plants, as well as interesting observations on some the gardeners who have grown them.
