A fitting companion to Allan Armitage's book on perennials, Armitage's Manual of Annuals, Biennials, and Half-Hardy Perennials (Timber Press, 2001, $39.95) is not only comprehensively encyclopedic but also a great read. In 604 pages, Armitage covers 245 genera plus a great number of species and cultivated varieties. The book is illustrated with both color photos and line drawings.
