Get a Head Start on Fall Garden Planting
Some seeds are difficult to get started out in the garden, demanding a well-prepared seedbed of fine-textured soil. Others are reluctant to sprout when temperatures are still too warm out in the garden. I like to start seeds of lettuce, spinach, and other greens in planting trays filled with a fine-textured seed starting mix in an outdoor location beneath the outer shade of a tree. This spot is cooler, allowing for earlier seeding while still providing enough light to get seedlings off to a good start. I cover the flats with a sheet of clear plastic to hold in moisture until the seeds sprout. This is also a way to check out of the viability of an older packet of seeds without taking up garden space in the process.
