What's That Bug?
What's That Bug Web site is a reference that could only exist on the Internet. It is great fun to cruise in the archives and look at bug photos people have sent in to be identified, but it's the writers who make it sing. Started as a project by fine arts majors, the site has reproduced faster than the insects it features. Their archives are an amazing collection of common and exotic bugs, and new ones join the party weekly, as people send in their queries.
A Decade of Beach Walks, by George Thatcher (Quail Ridge Press, 2008; $12), will become a refreshing classic wherever feet meet sand. Writing daily for the Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi, Mississippi, from 1997-2008, Thatcher drew on all his senses to capture life at the seashore. The columns are gathered in this unassuming little book that will fit nicely into your beach bag. His descriptions of weather, water, and wildlife take you to the water's edge to watch the birds soar, feel the waves touch bare toes, and see the losses wrought by Katrina. If you read to hone your insights, for inspiration or meditation, or if you miss the beach when you aren't there, you'll like this book.
