Summer Garden Fair
San Francisco Botanical Garden Society invites gardeners and garden-lovers to the Summer Garden Fair on Saturday, August 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park. This annual community event provides a wonderful opportunity to meet knowledgeable members from various plant societies and science groups to learn more about plants and gardening. It's a great time to meet other gardeners, talk to local experts, marvel at home-grown fuchsias and begonias, see inside a live beehive, and purchase special plants and garden accessories. Admission is free. For info, call (415) 661-1316; or go to: http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org.

Books

Gardener's Bedside Reader
What do gardeners do when they are not in the garden? They read about gardening, and the Gardener's Bedside Reader, edited by Kari Cornell ( Voyageur Press, 2008; $27.95), is full of those quirky, wonderful things that gardeners love, such as Ann Lovejoy's new Slug Boots, and Michael Pollan's (author of Botany of Desire) torrid affair with old roses. The book is liberally peppered with gorgeous illustrations, and there is even a recipe or two. This book would make a lovely gift, even for yourself.
