Seed-Starting Basics
When you like to start your own seeds, Park's Success with Seed (Park Seed Company, $24.95) is a must for your gardening library. It is chock full of information to help you be successful with germinating, growing, and transplanting flowering plants and vegetables. Their new edition covers more than 400 different plants, including 70 species not covered in the older edition.

Concolor Fir
One of my favorite soft-needled evergreens is concolor fir (Abies concolor), with its wonderful bluish green foliage and pyramidal form. It will add a bold statement in the landscape. Give it plenty of room to grow and spread. Keep this fir watered regularly to maintain its beauty and prevent needle desiccation. There is a dwarf cultivar for use in a rock garden. Seek out Abies concolor 'Compacta'.
