Coastal and Tropical South
My Valentine to you is garden related in that many of us enjoy plants as art and as expressions of love. The artist Karen Hatzigeorgiou is a multimedia artist who works in collage and altered books. Her work is amazing, but so are her research and categorizing skills. On her site, Karen's Whimsy, on the lower right hand side of the front page, she opens the door to public domain images. Complete with a search engine inside her pages, you can find gardens, specific plants, and yes, Valentines, scanned from her collection of pre-1923 publications. All are in the public domain, and she makes them available for free, with the request that you use them to create the art of your choice and credit her collection whenever possible. Go for a stroll through the site, and when you find your favorite, make it your Valentine.
Favorite or New Plant
The famous fragrance Chanel No. 5 owes its inspiration to the perfume tree, also called ylang-ylang tree and known botanically as Cananga odorata. It's a huge tree for the tropics region, particularly the humid tropics like its native Malaysia and Indonesia. The flowers are most unusual, yellow with long, skinny petals. Buy this one, since its seeds take several years to get growing. It's also used in aromatherapy for its reputed calming effects.
