Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
In Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life (HarperCollins, 2007; $26.95), Author Barbara Kingsolver chronicles a year as she and her family strive to eat only food raised on nearby farms or grown themselves. "This is the story of a year in which we made every attempt to feed ourselves animals and vegetables whose provenance we really knew . . . and of how our family was changed by our first year of deliberately eating food produced from the same place where we worked, went to school, loved our neighbors, drank the water, and breathed the air."
Informative without being preachy, Kingsolver discusses cultural expectations, the concept of sacrifice vs. abundance, and the trials of bringing a family along as one attempts to live out an experiment -- all with a sense of humor. The author isn't asking us to adopt this lifestyle, only to ponder the concepts of food and nourishment, family and community. This is a perfect book for a snowy winter weekend.
