Clever Gardening Technique

Heel in Bare-Root Bargains
If the weather won't cooperate with your plans, bare-root plants can be temporarily heeled in until you have time to plant them in their permanent locations. Select a shaded site and dig a shallow V-shaped trench. Once the trench has been prepared, remove the plants from their protective packaging. Lay the plants into the trench at a 45-degree angle and cover loosely with soil. Bare-root plants can safely be left in this temporary trench for up to five weeks.
