Master Gardener Training
Get certified as a Master Gardener at the University of California Cooperative Extension Common Ground Garden Program. The next training runs from March 1 to May 31, 2008, and meets every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the office in east L.A. If you'd like to volunteer to help low-income county residents garden more successfully, consider applying. Application packets are available through January 15 and require LiveScan fingerprinting and a background check. Submission deadline for application survey, LiveScan, and $100 payment is January 31. University of California Cooperative Extension Common Ground Garden Program
For lots of great local gardening information, go to the University of California Cooperative Extension Common Ground Garden Program site. It covers the basics, including information about how to start a garden, growing in containers, and composting. You'll also find helpful monthly garden tips, vegetable and flower planting guides, and ideas for saving water in the garden. Additional topics include recycling household throwaways into garden tools (including photos of examples), starting school or community gardens, and holiday recipes.
