San Francisco Botanical Garden
The San Francisco Botanical Garden, in association with Bartlett Tree Experts, will begin a comprehensive tree management plan to care for the aging beauties that have served as the backbone of the arboretum since its inception in the late 19th century.
Elderly trees require expert handling. The Bartlett Tree Experts have developed a plan to care for the health and safety of the 800 major trees in garden. The plan includes computerized mapping and plant health tracking, measures to resolve significant safety and hazardous conditions, and a prioritization of arborist work that will address the most critical needs of the oldest trees within the botanical garden.
Some areas of the garden will be closed to visitors while work is in progress. For further information, call (415) 661-1316 or visit: http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org.
Flower Confidential (Algonquin Books, 2007, $23.95) is an engrossing book by Amy Stewart about the business of the floral industry. I learned that bouquets of roses travel halfway around the world before they reach your living room, and Stargazer lilies got their name by being the first lily cultivar with upward-facing flowers. Stewart visits flower farms and follows the blooms from the field to the auction house. Her Valentine's day tale is more of an adventure story than a romance. It's an amazing world where scent comes second to staying power, and size does matter. These are not your grandmother's flowers any more!
