Clever Gardening Technique

Encouraging Colorful Bark
The new shoots of red-twig dogwood and yellow-twig dogwood are more colorful than older branches, so judicious pruning in late winter/early spring will encourage a new supply of colorful bark. Remove one-third of the oldest, thickest branches to their base every year, and new, colorful shoots will take their place.

Open Garden Days
The Garden Conservancy site lists gardens around the country and the dates they will be open to the public this year. The list changes from year to year so there's always something new to see. Since some garden hosts don't list their gardens on the Web site, to see the complete listing for the region of the country you're interested in, you'll need to purchase an Open Days Directory.
