The Winter Garden
Although most of us are holed up in our dens for the winter season simply dreaming of better times, Val Bourne has produced a work of art in his book, The Winter Garden (Cassell Illustrated, 2006; $19.95), to coax us out into the winter garden. The photos are breathtaking, and although the plant choices are not specific to the Midwest, many of them are plants that thrive here. She gives cultural advice, but more importantly, she gives tips for enhancing the winter landscape for our enjoyment.

All-Season Cold Frame
The All-Season Cold Frame from Charley's Greenhouse and Garden company provides an excellent way to start off your gardening season. It has double-wall polycarbonate panels, an aluminum frame, and is portable so you can pick it up and move it around. If you want to add a little more technology, you can also purchase an automatic vent control that will take some of the guesswork out of keeping your lettuce from too much heat or cold. For more info, visit: http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com and search under "cold frame."
