Water Gardening in Containers
The University of Illinois Urban Extension Service has a wonderful Container Water Gardening site. It gives clear, precise information on all aspects of water gardening, and can hook even the most rudimentary beginner on the excitement and interest that a pond or container water garden can bring. If you want to start water gardening, begin with a container and the advice from this site, and then you'll be ready to move forward quickly to bigger and deeper ponds.

Landscape Design
Designing the Landscape, by Tony Bertauski (Prentice Hall, 2004; $38.80) is the best reference I've found on the subject. It takes you step-by-step from the initial stages of deciding exactly what the landscape will be to the final product. The illustrations are clear, and the discussion of plants is quite good, although you will have to go elsewhere for detailed plant selection. I appreciate the fact that it doesn't overwhelm and make you want to run screaming for a professional designer.
