Japanese Garden Family Sundays
Visit the Chicago Botanic Garden for Japanese Garden Family Sundays. These special days on the first and third Sundays of each month, May 21 to October 1, are designed for families to experience Japanese culture, crafts, and folk tales. Two Japanese Garden mini-festivals will feature performances, storytelling, and crafts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20; and Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17. The botanic garden is located at 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, (847) 835-5440; http://www.chicagobotanic.org.
Tool or Gardening Product
The best tool I've found for weeding is the Swoe. This stainless double-edged hoe is made in England but available through many US garden stores. The tilted blade is easily pushed (my favorite) or pulled through the soil, slicing off weeds below the surface. It also works well to fluff up the soil to make powdery soil mulch in dry times. Beats a standard hoe hands-down.
