Creative Vegetable Gardening
Although there are a number of books on potagers, among the best is Creative Vegetable Gardening, by Joy Larkcom (Mitchell Beazley, 2004; $19.95). Even though Larkcom is a British writer, the book includes both photos from and relevant information for the US. Besides her own personal experiences and some history of potagers, Larkcom really focuses on the elements of design, including some suggested plans, as well as many ideas on how to use vegetables, flowers, fruits, and herbs in the garden. Another choice is the recently published Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook, by Jennifer R. Bartley (Timber Press, 2006; $34.95).

Sun Protection
Recent articles in The New York Times (June 6, 2006) and The American Gardener (May/June 2006) discussed the importance of sun protection, including both UVA and UVB rays. In choosing sunglasses, look for ones with 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Besides using sunscreens, another option to consider is UV-shielding clothing. An inexpensive way to boost the sun-screening ability of your own clothes is to use SunGuard (http://www.sunguardsunprotection.com).
