Celebrate the Solstice
December 21 marked the winter solstice, the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Also, the sun had its lowest arc in the sky. Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. Many ancient cultures performed elaborate rituals to mark this turning point in the year, and many of our current holiday traditions harken back to these solstice celebrations. The Solstice Web site includes abundant information on the history of the solstice, as well as how ancient cultures influenced so many of our holiday traditions.
