Vegetable Gardening in Containers
From the Texas A & M Cooperative Extension Service comes this Vegetable Gardening in Containers site with a good summary of container gardening, including a valuable list of vegetable varieties suited to growing in pots. Although they have compact habits, not all of the plants are dwarf or small-fruited vegetables. Most are readily available in our region or by mail order.
Snakes to Know
U.S. Guide to Venomous Snakes and their Mimics, by Scott Shupe (Stoeger Publishing, 2005; $22.95), will get your attention from the cover onward through more than 100 excellent photos of snakes in their habitat. Written by a herpetologist who began his career at the famed Ross Allen Reptile Institute in Silver Springs, FL, the book is a quick-reference field guide to the bad boys and the wannabees. Clear language and a determination to educate bring Shupe's forty years' of experience to the fore. He wants you, the gardener, to know what you're seeing and what you're not, and to react intelligently. Beyond that, he has provided a detailed natural history of each species and his personal experiences with many of them. Read it yourself, and donate a copy to the library, too, so everyone else can.
