Clever Gardening Technique
The current spell of warm, sunny weather has provided a good opportunity to do some early-spring cleanup. I spent the weekend raking out perennial beds, trimming back dead foliage, removing annuals, and spreading a new layer of mulch. The gardens look so much tidier now. I even planted some forgotten daffodil bulbs.
With high temperatures in the 60s and 70s, it's hard to believe that forecasters are predicting a hard winter, but we still have months before the "real" spring arrives. If you decide to do your own late-winter cleanup, take care not to tread on perennial plant crowns, and be sure to compost the trimmings so you can return the nutrients to the soil.
