Viburnum Leaf Beetle Project
If your viburnums have been food for the viburnum leaf beetle this summer, here's a great resource to help you save your plants. The Viburnum Leaf Beetle Citizen Science Project at Cornell University is assisting gardeners with control measures and at the same time collecting data about the extent of the damage to plants in North America. The site has photos of all stages of the insect, a discussion board, research updates, and links to other resources. Results from a study on the usefulness of soap sprays and horticultural oils are expected within a month.

The Magic of Lanterns
Hundreds of lanterns handcrafted of silk by artists from Shanghai will be brightening the Chinese Garden at the Montreal Botanic Gardens from September 10 until October 31, 2004. The authentic Chinese garden was inspired by the private gardens popular in the southern Yangzi River region during the Ming dynasty. While the garden is beautiful in the daytime, it's wondrous by lantern light at night. It will be open until 9 p.m. every night during the celebration.
