San Francisco Flower and Garden Show
It's garden show season, and the Grand Daddy of them all is the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. Once a year, the Cow Palace is transformed into a paradise by the area's top landscapers. There are lectures by experts, a glorious gardeners shopping bazaar and marketplace, representatives of various plant societies, and of course, the lush garden displays. The last day of the show usually means great bargains for orchid collectors.
The show runs March 17 to 21; Wednesday - Saturday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Sunday: 9 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. The Henry's Garden crew will be shooting there on Thursday, March 18th, and going live from the show at 10 a.m. on March 21.
Tickets are $20 at the door. Ample parking is available at the Cow Palace for $8. For more information, go to http://www.gardenshow.com.
The new Sunset book, Container Gardening (Sunset Publishing, 2004; $14.95) goes one step further than their previous book on the same subject. This edition includes handy planting tips, such as an improved method for planting in strawberry jars. There is a section on water gardens in containers, which I may have to try my hand at. There is an entire chapter dedicated to watering container-grown plants, including tips on setting up drip systems. You can always count on Sunset to deliver the cutting edge in garden technology. Innovative new designs, easy-care plant combinations, and beautiful color photographs all make this book a 10!
