In Case of Disaster
The Plant Pest Handbook from the Connecticut Cooperative Extension Service is unsurpassed. If your pansies have grey leaves or rotted crowns or a host of other problems, this is the place to go. If you don't have problem, visit anyway, just to see what you're missing.
Panolas, a crossbreed between pansies and violas, have gotten plenty of press since their introduction a year or two ago, and they get my vote. They perform well both in pots and in garden beds, the colors are bright, the flowers almost as large as regular (not mammoth) pansies, and they pass my thunderstorm test: after a huge rainstorm, they're back on top of their stems in a matter of hours.
