Books

Your House, Your Garden
Gordon Hayward's new book, Your House, Your Garden: A Foolproof Approach to Garden Design, (W.W. Norton & Company, 2003; $39.95) is one of the most downright practical books on design I've seen (and I'm always on the lookout for them). It focuses on how to make the design of your gardens more pleasing by relating them to your house, garage, barn, and other outbuildings. To illustrate the point, Hayward tackles design challenges such as the narrow side yard, the unsightly septic mound, and the awkward space between house and garage. His book helped me with my recent deck project.
