Celebrating the Relationship Between People and Place
"People in Place: An Experience in the Granite State" is the title of an upcoming conference at the University of New Hampshire on October 9-10. The conference will help participants learn how to showcase a garden's special "spirit of place," by exploring the geology, soils, plants and animals, natural history, and cultural history of a place. Speakers and field trips are included. For more information, call (603) 862-4088, or visit: http://www.sustainableunh.unh.edu
Garlic, Onion, & Other Alliums
Whether you're first and foremost a flower gardener or a vegetable gardener, this book will tantalize. Garlic, Onion, & Other Alliums, by Ellen Spector Platt (Stackpole Books, 2003; $19.95) has something for everyone: plant lore, medicinal uses, growing instructions, craft projects, and recipes. By the time you're finished poring over it, you'll swear you can smell the aroma of chives.
