AAS Display Gardens
Plan to visit a local All-America Selections Display Garden this summer. Since 1948 AAS has been evaluating plants in test gardens across the country and evaluating their performance. You'll get to see the newest flower varieties growing in a climate similar to your own and get ideas for adding these into your landscape. The Vermont Community Botanic Garden is the site of an AAS Garden, and is also the home of the National Gardening Association. Stop by for a visit if you're in the neighborhood! For a state-by-state listing of AAS gardens, visit the All-America Selections Web site at http://www.all-americaselections.org.

Floriculture Fact Sheets
The UMASS Floriculture Fact Sheets are directed toward commercial growers but they offer no-nonsense information about flower growing and give insight into how new plants are evaluated. The 2001 New England Trial Garden Evaluation Web page details the performance of various annual flowers at their Massachusetts trial gardens. Field Grown Annuals for Cut Flowers recommends flowers for cutting. Insect Problems in Commercial Production of Outdoor Cut Flowers provides helpful insights into identifying pest problems and offers some good tips for non-toxic controls. Note, however, that the chemical controls listed at the end may not be appropriate for or available to homeowners.
