This is a handsome, quality, broadleaf evergreen shrub from Japan, of course. It is occasionally planted in some landscapes in well-to-do neighbourhoods in the Philadelphia, PA region of USDA Zones 6b & 7a. It is expensive to buy. It is known by professional landscape designers but not so much by the general public. It should be grown in good quality, moist soil in part-shade or light shade, away from strong mid-day sun and away from an open exposure with lots of wind. If it is grown in too much shade it does not flower or fruit well or fill out well. It is definitely deer resistant. I don't know of birds or anything eating the red fruits here in eastern North America.
