Pruning Hot Lips Salvia

"How far back should I prune my Hot Lips Salvias? They are approximately 3' high and at least that wide. Should I cut them back by 2/3?? Should I do the pruning in early January and, if not then, when should it be done. I live in Westchester not far from LAX." - Read the answer
