dogwood tree
Is it normal for the bark on the tree to split? do I need to apply tree seal?

It may be suffering from anthracnose or another fungus infection. Antracnose has been observed mostly in the East and Southeast.

In any case, remove all loose bark as it can harbor insects and fungus. A seal is not necessary.
