-What is best way to clean exterior surface of terra cotta pots. Just planted new flowers in them for this year, but outside looks bad...whitish stains, etc. Please help!!
The whitish stains are salts that have leached out of the soil. Generally the pots should be scrubbed before you plant. Moisten the pots with water before you begin and water the plants well. Use a solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water and a soft scrub brush to wash the exterior. Rinse VERY well so the soil inside the pots don't absorb the bleach since terra cotta is porous.
Do be sure and wear old clothes as the bleach will stain them when you scrub. I've learned that the hard way. :-)
