Black knot on my prune tree.

Black knot on my prune tree.

I have a stanley prune-plum tree with a big black knot on the main leader. I removed several lateral branches with smaller knots during pruning but this one is on the main. To cut or not to cut....that is the question!

Cut it out since it will only spread. You can train a new leader from somewhere else.
Be sure to cut well below the obvious area of infection. A Lime/sulfur spray applied twice before bud break is supposed to help contol this fungus.
