Canna Lillies

I putin some new giant canna lilly bulbs last year. The leaves grew profusely, very thick, green and tall. But not asingle flower was produced. They are in a rich bed, good water and sunny. Any ideas on how to get them to blume? or do they just need to wait till their second year?
