getting rid of grass
i am making a cottage garden in my front yard. i am trying to find a way to kill the existing grass without hurting the plants that are already there. is there some kind of chemical that kills grass but doesn't hurt plants and scrubs?

The simplest way to kill grass in an existing flower bed, or to make a new flower bed, is to cover the grass with newspaper and cover the newspaper with another mulch. Deprived of access to light most all grasses will die in a short while and add needed organic matter to the soil.
