In acid soils, ashes are useful to both add Potassium and to increase soil pH. Most soils in the arid west are alkaline, and adding ashes can raise to pH too high for good plant growth. Before adding them, I'd get a soil test done and see what your pH is.-

My Grandad always packed the ashes onto the paths in his vegie garden - "keeps those so-and-so snails and bugs off my vegies" he always says.
