Tall strong flowers

I need help!! Every year I attempt to have a garden in my back yard and every year it dies. I water it every night, but my back yard is very hot during the summer days. I need to know what to plant that can survive me and my back yard. I would like something that is tall and beautiful. And something that smells good. Thanx!!!
