there must be something that looks presentable to plant around ones house that they will leave alone!?!? __

If deer population is high, they'll eat almost anything, including toxic plants such as monkshood. There are some plants that they like more than others, so you might have some luck with the plants on this deer resistant plants list from WVU.-
