Rose & clematis

In our area (Z4) most of the large-flowered clematis's die to the ground each year and grow completely new vines. They grow great, but the old, brown vines, with all their tendrils, are wretched to get out of a trellis. I don't even want to THINK about getting it out of a thorny rose!
How have other people dealt with this? I would dearly love to have some of these pairings.

-I just read the article on pairing roses and clematis, but still have a question that has been eluding me for years.
