The native americans grew corn, members of the squash family (pumpkins, squash, etc.) and beans all in the same plot as the Three Sisters. The beans, legumes, are supposed to aid in supplying the corn with needed Nitrogen and the squash familys very large leaves shaded the soil to aid in "weed" suppression and moisture retention.
