pruning roses
Posted by Marilyn from Florida, zone 8 on 2010-01-29 02:58:00

I have a couple of lovely roses that are way too tall. They are near 6 ft. I need to prune them back, but I don't know when or how far. They are mostly just 3 sticks with flowers on the top. It's been so cold I'm afraid to cut them now. I'm afraid of killing them because the blooms smell heavenly. Any help will be appreciated.

hi, since your in florida you should be able to prune them anytime now...I normally wait till they start to show new groth in sping and prune the old canes but if you want yours to bush more you should prune it down to the base and it will start new shoots and bush out more....pruning in spring is the best time and also make sure to dead head the old flowers after they start to die off to pruduce more of them during the summer....Hope that this helps....
