Magnolia tree roots

We have a Magnolia tree planted close to our Koi pond that has a heavy plastice liner. What kind of tree roots do Magnolia trees have? We are concerned this tree's roots will penetrate the pond liner. If we need to transplant the tree what is the best time of year to do that? Thanks
