Newspaper, layed on your gardens soil and covering anything growing there, will deprive those plants of access to the sunlight they need to grow and when those plants are deprived of sunlight they will die. Covering your gardens soil with newspaper, and then covering that newspaper with a mulch to hide and hold the paper in place, is something many of us have done for years and it is good for the garden soil.
