Lilac rejuvination

I have decided to do the one-time rejuvination of my 18 year lilacs. Some sites say to do the trimming in March/April, others say late winter, and a few sites say winter. My spring schedule will not be pretty, and I'm thinking of doing the trimming in December and January, unless I am seriously going to compromise the health of the plants. We've had fairly mild winters the last few years.
